VASCO DA GAMA TOMB IN ST. FRANCIS CHURCH

St. Francis Church is the first European Church to be built in India within the oldest European settlement of Fort Cochin. Presumably it owes its origin to the Franciscans Friars who accompanied the Portuguese expedition in 1500 AD while travelling tourist places.
Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea. It was a milestone in world history, as it marked the beginning of a sea-based phase of global connect.
Here in St. Francis Church, Vasco Da Gama was laid to rest in the year 1524 AD until his remains were removed and taken to Portugal in the year 1538 AD.
The grave stones that were removed from the church floor have been refixed over the side wall of the church, which is a tourist place also for travellers.
